Shall we Repair or Replace? Thieves Damage and Steal Euroscope
The mayor of Lowestoft issues a stern warning against the “mindless” vandalism inflicted upon a prominent landmark at Ness Point in Lowestoft, Suffolk, the UK’s most easterly location. Over two days in early December, The Euroscope, featuring plaques indicating distances to global destinations, fell victim to destructive acts, with numerous plaques damaged and the central disc stolen. The potential cost of repairs, estimated to be in the thousands of pounds, prompted concern from Lowestoft Town Council.
Sonia Barker, the mayor of Lowestoft, expressed her dismay at the senseless act of vandalism, emphasizing the significance of the landmark to the community and the council. Nestled near the sea wall in the North Denes area, The Euroscope serves as a starting and finishing point for charity challenges across the UK.
Barker urged swift resolution, calling on the community to assist in reporting any relevant information to the police. The Euroscope, installed in 1997 at a cost of £18,000 funded by Shell UK, Suffolk County Council, the former Waveney Council, and the European Union, has long been a welcome sight but also to some controversial with many people calling for there to be to do and something more significant at Ness Point. Being one of the most famous locations in the UK and being part of many amazing challenges which people undertake where they visit all the extremities of the UK site for locals and visitors alike. This begs the questions should we repair the Euroscope at Ness Point or should we see this mindless vandalism as an opportunity to fund raise for new and more exciting and tourism generating ‘things’ at Ness Point.
The Damage as caused widespread condemnation of the vandalism was echoed by Aby Gooch, a regular visitor to the landmark, who expressed disbelief and disappointment at the defacement of this sought-after area in Lowestoft. Suffolk Police has issued an appeal for witnesses and information to aid in their investigation into the criminal damage.
Keep vigilant residents for criminals operating at Ness Point.
